Quick answer: Any store that USDA has authorized for SNAP accepts EBT, and USDA counts more than 250,000 of them, from local grocers to large supermarket chains.1 That includes most supermarkets, Walmart, Target, Costco, Sam's Club, ALDI, many convenience and dollar stores, and thousands of farmers markets. To check one store, search its address in USDA's SNAP Retailer Locator.2 For how SNAP works and how to apply, see our SNAP guide.

Which stores accept EBT?

Stores that accept EBT fall into a few types, and convenience stores are the biggest group by count. On Oct. 25, 2026, USDA's retailer data listed 248,872 authorized locations.3

The locator data doesn't say what else its "Other" group holds.4

Count isn't where the money goes. In fiscal year 2022, 78.0% of SNAP benefits were spent at supermarkets and super stores, 5.3% at convenience stores and 5.9% at online retailers.5

How do I know what stores accept EBT?

Check the store's address in USDA's locator before you go. It is the official list.

  1. Open the SNAP Retailer Locator. Enter a street address, city and state, or ZIP code, then pick a store for details and directions.2
  2. Filter by store type. Choose "Farmers and Markets" under "SNAP Store Type Classification" to see only markets.6
  3. Check online stores by state. USDA lists the retailers that take SNAP online in each state.7
  4. Ask at the register. Chains enroll store by store, so one location can differ from another.

Last verified Oct. 25, 2026. Chains enroll each location separately, so a "Yes" here doesn't promise every store. Looking for restaurant chains like Wingstop or Little Caesars? Do convenience stores and gas stations take EBT?

Many do: 108,848 convenience stores were authorized on Oct. 25, 2026.3 You can buy cold food and drinks there, but not food that is hot when you pay, so the roller-grill hot dog is out.22

Does 7-Eleven take EBT?

Yes. 7-Eleven says "We accept SNAP/EBT" and that SNAP works only at stores USDA has authorized.19 Its terms also say SNAP benefits are not available in Puerto Rico.19

What places can you go to with EBT?

Beyond grocery stores, you can use EBT at farmers markets, specialty food shops, online grocers and, for some people, restaurants. Butcher shops and produce stands often qualify because staple foods make up more than half of their sales.23

Do farmers markets take EBT?

Many do: 7,119 farmers markets and farm stands were authorized on Oct. 25, 2026.3 Some markets run a scrip system, trading your EBT purchase for paper scrip, tokens or receipts that you spend at the stalls.24 USDA also funds incentive projects that help SNAP shoppers buy more fruits and vegetables, so ask the market if it offers extra produce dollars.25

Can you use EBT at restaurants?

Only through the Restaurant Meals Program, in nine states: Arizona, California, Illinois (Cook and Franklin counties), Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Rhode Island and Virginia.26 Everyone in your SNAP household must be 60 or older, disabled or homeless, or be the spouse of someone who qualifies.26 Our restaurant guide lists the chains state by state.

What stores take EBT online?

SNAP online shopping works in all 50 states and DC; Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands have not started it yet.7 You still enter your PIN online, and SNAP can't pay delivery or other fees.7

Each state has its own list. Texas, for example, lists 37 online retailers, including Albertsons, ALDI, Amazon, Costco, H-E-B, Target, Thrive Market, Walgreens, Walmart and Whole Foods.11

What stores use EBT on DoorDash and Instacart?

It depends on your state's list. In Texas, USDA links DashMart, Dollar General and CVS stores on DoorDash, and El Rancho on Instacart.11 Kroger warns that Instacart doesn't price-match substitutions, so a pricier swap goes on your backup card.15 For step-by-step setup on each app, see our guide to using EBT on DoorDash, Instacart and Amazon.

Why do some stores not accept EBT?

A store has to apply, be approved and carry enough staple foods. Today that means at least 36 staple items across four groups, or staple foods making up more than half of sales.23 A place that earns more than half its sales from prepared food counts as a restaurant and can't take SNAP outside the Restaurant Meals Program.23 Every authorized store also needs EBT equipment.1

Will my corner store stop taking EBT in November 2026?

Some might. Starting Nov. 4, 2026, every SNAP store except specialty shops must stock at least seven varieties in each of four groups: dairy, grains, protein, and vegetables or fruits.27 Three groups need a perishable item, and the store needs at least 84 stocking units in all.27 A store that falls short is withdrawn from SNAP and can reapply after six months.27 The rule does not change what you can buy.27

What can you no longer buy with EBT in 2026?

It depends on your state. USDA's waiver page lists 23 states that restrict soda, candy or similar items, and every store in those states must follow the rule.2827 USDA lists a target start of April 1, 2026 for Texas (sweetened drinks and candy) and April 20, 2026 for Florida (soda, energy drinks, candy and prepared desserts).28 Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina and Virginia have a target date of Nov. 1, 2026.28 A federal court stopped the waivers for Colorado, Iowa, Tennessee and West Virginia on June 22, 2026.28

Everywhere, SNAP can't buy alcohol, tobacco, vitamins and supplements, pet food, household supplies or food that is hot at checkout.22

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a free Costco membership with EBT?

No. Costco says it doesn't offer free or discounted memberships, though all its warehouses take EBT.1210 Sam's Club requires a membership to use SNAP but offers qualifying government-assistance recipients a discounted new membership online.13 Our Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's EBT guide compares the warehouse club offers.

Can I use my EBT card in another state?

Yes. USDA says SNAP shoppers with EBT chip cards must be able to use them at every SNAP-authorized store in the country, and stores must be ready for out-of-state cards.29

Which stores accept EBT cash?

EBT cash is a separate cash benefit on the same card. Target takes EBT cash in stores but not online.9 At Dollar Tree, choose cash or food benefits carefully, because a finished sale can't be switched.18

Do stores that take EBT also take WIC?

Not always. Sam's Club takes SNAP but is not an authorized WIC store, and Kroger can't take WIC for pickup or delivery.1315 WIC has its own store lists; see which stores accept WIC and our WIC guide.

Where can I get food if my SNAP runs out before the month ends?

Food pantries give groceries for free, with no EBT needed. In our directory, 889 of 7,566 confirmed listings also say they help people sign up for SNAP.30 Find a food pantry near you, and check your EBT balance before you shop so a sale isn't declined.

How we checked this

On Oct. 25, 2026, we read USDA's retailer, locator, online, eligibility, stocking rule, waiver, farmers market, EBT modernization and Restaurant Meals Program pages, plus the FY 2022 redemption study.1272327285 We read each chain's own help page the same day.819 The store-type counts come from USDA's locator data, which listed 248,872 locations that day, a little below the "more than 250,000" on USDA's retailer page.31 We did not visit stores or test cards, so check your store in the locator first.
