Does Target Take EBT? Walmart and ALDI SNAP Rules (2026)

Quick answer: Yes. Do Walmart, Target and ALDI take EBT?

Yes. On Oct. 26, 2026, USDA's retailer data listed 9,334 SNAP-authorized locations under the three names.⁶

Does Target take EBT?

Yes. After you swipe your EBT card at a Target register, you pick which balance to use: SNAP or EBT cash.¹ SNAP covers the eligible food, and you pay for everything else with another card or cash.¹

• Refunds for items paid with EBT go back to your EBT card.¹
• Most items paid with EBT can be returned within 90 days under Target's return policy.¹

Does Target take EBT at self-checkout?

Target's help pages describe swiping your EBT card at checkout and don't exclude self-checkout lanes.¹ If a self-checkout screen won't take your card, or you need to split the payment, move to a staffed lane.

Can you use EBT on the Target app?

Yes, for shipping, pickup and delivery orders in eligible states.¹ You need a free Target account.¹

1. In the Target app or on Target.com, go to your account, then Payments.
2. Add a payment card and choose the type EBT card.
3. Build your cart. At checkout, adjust the amount charged to SNAP if you want, then enter your PIN.¹

Your backup card pays for items that aren't SNAP-eligible, Target Plus items, the extra cost of a pricier substitution, fees and tips.¹ Order minimums change when you pay with EBT:

• Order Pickup: no minimum.¹
• Same Day Delivery: you can order under $35, but you pay a $7 delivery fee with another card.¹ Non-members pay $9.99 per delivery on orders over $35.⁸
• Shipping: orders under $35 carry a $5.99 shipping fee.¹

EBT can't buy a Shipt membership.¹

Does Target take EBT cash?

In stores, yes. Online, no: Target says it does not accept EBT cash online.¹ EBT cash is a separate cash benefit on the same card, and you choose it at the register prompt.¹

Does Walmart take EBT?

Yes, in stores, on Walmart.com and in the Walmart app.² Walmart lists EBT cards from participating states as a payment method for EBT-eligible items.⁹

• Not sure an item counts? Scan its barcode in the Walmart app and look for the "SNAP eligible" badge.²
• At the register, swipe your EBT card first and enter your PIN.²
• The card covers only SNAP-eligible food, not nonfood items.²

Can you use EBT for Walmart pickup and delivery?

Yes. Add your SNAP EBT card to your Walmart wallet, use the SNAP EBT filter or badge to find eligible items, and follow the EBT steps at checkout.² You can shop non-SNAP items in the same order.² SNAP still can't pay for delivery fees or other charges, and you'll enter your PIN for online orders.⁵

Walmart's free grocery delivery comes with Walmart+, on orders of $35 or more.¹⁰ SNAP households can get that membership at half price (see below).

Can you use EBT on Walmart Pay?

Walmart's Walmart Pay page lists credit, debit and gift cards saved to your account, not EBT.¹¹ In stores, plan to swipe your physical EBT card at the register, as Walmart's SNAP help page says.²

Does ALDI take EBT?

Yes. All ALDI stores accept SNAP benefits, and ALDI lists EBT, SNAP and Link cards among its store payment types.³¹² ALDI also offers cash back of $10, $20, $40 or $100 with qualifying cards.¹²

Do all ALDI locations accept EBT?

• Orders must be at least $10, and pickup fees start at $1.99.¹⁴
• SNAP can't pay for tips, delivery fees, ordering fees or convenience fees.³
• You can't change the payment method after the order is placed.¹³

Does ALDI take WIC?

Can you get a Walmart+ or Target Circle 360 discount with EBT?

Yes. Walmart, Target and the Kroger family (including Ralphs) cut the price of their paid delivery memberships for people who get SNAP.¹⁵⁸¹⁶

• Walmart and Target check eligibility through SheerID, and you re-verify each year.¹⁵¹⁷ At Target, an EBT card (front and back) counts as proof.¹⁷
• If you don't re-verify at Target, the monthly plan renews at full price.¹⁷
• Your benefits can't pay for the membership itself, because SNAP pays only for food.¹⁶⁴

Do WinCo, Lidl, Grocery Outlet and Safeway take EBT?

Yes, but check your store. These chains have their own rules, and USDA's data shows which locations are authorized.⁶

Does WinCo take EBT?

Yes, at the majority of WinCo stores.¹⁸ WinCo doesn't take credit cards, so bring a PIN debit card or cash for nonfood items.¹⁸ USDA listed 147 WinCo locations.⁶

Does Lidl accept EBT?

USDA's data listed 202 SNAP-authorized Lidl locations on Oct. 26, 2026.⁶ Search your store in the SNAP Retailer Locator before you go.⁷

Does Grocery Outlet accept EBT?

USDA's data listed 657 SNAP-authorized locations with Grocery Outlet in the name.⁶ Confirm your store in the SNAP Retailer Locator.⁷

Does Safeway or Albertsons accept EBT?

Yes. Safeway takes EBT-SNAP for eligible items in stores and online, plus EBT cash.¹⁹ Online orders usually need a $30 minimum, and WIC works in stores only.¹⁹

Does Ralphs accept EBT?

Yes. USDA's data listed 178 Ralphs super stores.⁶ Ralphs and the rest of the Kroger family also take SNAP EBT for pickup and delivery.²⁰ Pay online at checkout: Ralphs no longer takes SNAP EBT at the curbside.²⁰ SNAP can't pay for shipped orders, and WIC can't be used for pickup or delivery.²⁰

What can you buy with EBT at Walmart, Target and ALDI?

The same eligible food you can buy with SNAP anywhere. The store doesn't change the rules.⁴

• Yes: fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and fish, dairy products, bread and cereal, snack foods, non-alcoholic beverages, and seeds or plants that grow food.⁴
• No: beer, wine and liquor, tobacco, vitamins and supplements, food that is hot when you pay, pet food, cleaning supplies, paper goods and hygiene items.⁴

Walmart's SNAP EBT-eligible categories include deli, coffee and tea, baby food and baby formula.²¹

What can you no longer buy with EBT in 2026?

It depends on your state. USDA lists 23 states that have sought limits on soda, candy or similar items, and stores in those states must follow them.²² Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina and Virginia have a target start of Nov. 1, 2026.²² A federal court stopped the waivers for Colorado, Iowa, Tennessee and West Virginia on June 22, 2026.²² Our guide to stores that accept EBT tracks these changes.

Can I use EBT at ALDI self-checkout?

ALDI says all of its stores accept SNAP and doesn't single out any lane.³¹² If the self-checkout won't take your card, ask a cashier for help.

Why is my EBT card not working on the Walmart app?

Walmart's checklist: check your PIN, make sure the items are SNAP-eligible, and check that your balance covers them.² If it still fails, call the number on the back of your card.² USDA urges states to offer card security options, so if you turned one on, check its settings with your state.²³ Here's how to check your EBT balance.

Can you buy rotisserie chicken with EBT at Walmart?

Not a hot one. SNAP can't buy food that is hot when you pay, so a chicken from the warming case is out.⁴ Cold deli items are a different case, and Walmart lists deli among its SNAP EBT-eligible categories.²¹

Is Walmart closing November 1 because of SNAP?

No. That rumor spread in October 2025, and Walmart told AFP the claims were false and that its stores would stay open.²⁴ What does start on Nov. 1, 2026 is new limits on sugary drinks, and in some cases candy, in four states.²²

Does the Starbucks inside Target take EBT?

On Oct. 26, 2026, we read the SNAP EBT and payment pages of Target, Walmart, ALDI, WinCo, Safeway and Ralphs, and their membership discount pages.^123181920 We read USDA's pages on eligible foods, online shopping and food restriction waivers.⁴⁵²² The same day, we counted locations in USDA's SNAP retailer data by store name and store type.⁶ We did not visit stores or test cards, and we found no Lidl or Grocery Outlet page that states its EBT policy, so those answers rest on USDA's data.
