TEFAP (Emergency Food)
Free emergency food through local food banks and pantries
What is TEFAP?
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that provides USDA commodity foods to food banks and food pantries for distribution to low-income households. When you visit a food pantry that gives out free groceries, much of that food comes through TEFAP.
Unlike SNAP, there is no formal application process for TEFAP. You simply visit a participating food pantry or food bank distribution. Many of the food pantries listed on PantryPath distribute TEFAP food.
How TEFAP Connects to Food Pantries
The USDA purchases food and ships it to state agencies, which then distribute it to food banks like those in the Feeding America network. Food banks distribute to local food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters. When you visit a food pantry listed on PantryPath, you may be receiving TEFAP food along with donations from local sources.
TEFAP food is free. You can receive TEFAP food while also receiving SNAP, WIC, and other food assistance. There are no limits on combining programs.
