Quick answer: To check your EBT balance, call the toll-free number on the back of your EBT card1 or sign in to your state's official app. That app is ebtEDGE in 32 states and DC, ConnectEBT in 13 states, and a state-specific app or site in 5 states.2 Your last store receipt also shows how much is left in your SNAP account.3
Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) has been the only way the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), still often called food stamps, is paid in every state since June 2004.4 For what SNAP benefits cover, see our SNAP guide; for how the card works, see our EBT card guide.
What are the ways to check your EBT balance?
There are five ways, and each shows the same SNAP balance.
| Way to check | What you need | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Phone line on the back of your card | Your card number; some states also ask your date of birth, address or Social Security number5,6 | Works with no internet. |
| Your state's app or cardholder website | A one-time sign-up with your card number | Also shows your transaction history.7 |
| Your last store receipt | The receipt from your last EBT purchase | Every receipt must list your remaining balance.3 It shows the balance as of that purchase, so a newer deposit won't be on it. |
| Balance inquiry at a store register | Your card at the store's point of sale (POS) machine | You can check without buying anything.8 Ask the cashier before you shop, if the store allows it.9 |
| Your Amazon or Walmart account | Your EBT card saved in the account | Shows the balance when you shop online.10,11 |

What number do you call to check your EBT balance?
Call the toll-free number on the back of your EBT card. It reaches your state's EBT customer service line, which is not the same as your SNAP office.12 In Alabama, for example, the EBT card line is 1-800-997-8888, a different number from the SNAP office.12
To check your EBT card balance by phone:
- Have your card in hand. The line asks for your card number.5,6
- Call the number on the card or in the state table below.
- Choose the balance option and confirm who you are. Utah asks for the date of birth, address and Social Security number of the main person on the account.5
- Listen for your balance. West Virginia's line runs 24 hours a day and also gives your last deposit and recent transactions.13
Why does the EBT phone line ask for your Social Security number?
It keeps strangers from hearing your account details. In 2022, USDA and HHS wrote to states about card skimming.14 They encouraged states to require a security check before giving out a balance by phone, such as the last four digits of the cardholder's Social Security number.14
Which app should you use to check your food stamp balance?
Use the app or website your state names. As of October 2026, 32 states and DC point you to ebtEDGE, and 13 states point you to ConnectEBT.2 Five states use a state-specific app or site: Connecticut (MyDSS), Louisiana (LifeInCheck), Massachusetts (DTA Connect), Montana (mybnft.com) and Texas (Your Texas Benefits).2
- Find your state's official app in the table below.
- Download only the app with that exact name. Tennessee warns against apps that charge to download, do not list FIS (the company that makes ebtEDGE) as the developer, or spell ebtEDGE differently.15
- Register with your card number and set up a login.
- Check your balance and history. West Virginia's portal shows the last 30 days and can block online and out-of-state purchases.13
What is ebtEDGE?
ebtEDGE is the cardholder website and mobile app from FIS, the official choice in 32 states and DC.2 On the web it is at www.ebtedge.com, where you can view balances, review transactions and replace a card.7 Some states, including Arizona and New Hampshire, send you to ebtedge.us instead.2 To reach ebtEDGE by phone, call your state's EBT line in the table below.
As of October 2026, Arkansas uses an app called "ebtEDGE New," which replaced the ConnectEBT app there.16
What is ConnectEBT?
ConnectEBT is the cardholder website and app from Conduent, at www.connectebt.com.17 It is the official choice in 13 states, including Alabama, Georgia, Ohio and South Carolina.2 New Jersey says the app lets you check your balance, confirm your last deposit, change your PIN and review up to 12 months of transaction history.18
What is the EBT balance phone number for your state?
We checked each number below on October 14, 2026, on a state agency page or document (for Minnesota, USDA's directory entry). All 51 phone numbers match USDA's SNAP State Directory of Resources.19
Some numbers online are out of date. Georgia's EBT card line is 1-888-421-3281; 1-877-423-4746 is the main Gateway line.20 Utah's line is 1-800-997-4444,5 not the 1-800-997-7414 on USDA's July 2024 list.21
The app a state names can also differ from USDA's directory. As of October 2026, New York22 and Maryland23 point you to ebtEDGE, while the directory still lists ConnectEBT for both.19

Is it safe to use Propel or another app to check your EBT balance?
The safest choice is the app or phone line your state names. Propel is a private company's app, not a state app.24 Six states say their official app is the only one they approve, support or recommend: Illinois,25 Louisiana,26 New Jersey,18 South Carolina,27 Texas9 and West Virginia.13
West Virginia names the Propel and Providers apps as ones not to use,13 and Texas says other apps could expose you to security or fraud risks.9 Delaware is the exception: its SNAP page lists the free Propel app next to ConnectEBT and its phone line.28
Propel's privacy policy, updated January 23, 2026, says the app may collect your EBT card number, Social Security number, date of birth, EBT login, balance and transactions.24 It says it does not store your full EBT card number, PIN or Social Security number.24 It may store the last four digits of your card number and, through a third-party security service, the login for your state EBT account.24 It says it does not sell your personal information.24
Why is your EBT balance $0, missing or lower than expected?
Here are the common reasons and what to do.
- New card not activated. Louisiana says a new Disaster SNAP (D-SNAP) card, issued after a disaster, shows a $0 balance until you activate it.29 Virginia has you set a new PIN for each new card,30 and Massachusetts asks you to activate your new chip card by November 29, 2026, by making a purchase or calling 1-800-997-2555.6
- Card locked. In Pennsylvania, a locked card blocks purchases and balance inquiries.31
- Not loaded yet. Benefits arrive on or about the same date each month, on a schedule your state sets.32 West Virginia's phone line tells you your last deposit.13
- No use for months. After 91 days with no use, your state may set your benefits aside ("off-line"). You can't spend them until you contact your state, and they must be back on your card within 48 hours after you do.32 Benefits you never use are removed for good after nine months (274 days).32 Use your card at least once every three months to avoid this.
- Charges you did not make. Lock or freeze your card, change your PIN and call your state's EBT line right away to report it. USDA's 2022 skimming letter encouraged changing your PIN at least monthly, before benefits are deposited.14 Federal replacement of stolen SNAP covered only thefts through December 20, 2024,33 so ask your state what help it offers now.
- Need proof? Your state must give you up to 2 calendar months of transaction history when you ask.8
How do you check the cash balance on your EBT card?
Cash benefits sit in a separate cash account on the same card, and you check them the same way. Pennsylvania's hotline, for example, gives both SNAP and cash balances,31 and Amazon shows Cash and SNAP side by side.10
To spend cash benefits at a register, choose the cash account. In Massachusetts, you insert or tap the card again and select "EBT Cash."6 You can also take cash out at an ATM or get cash back at participating stores.31 In Kansas, for example, $1.00 is taken from your cash account for each ATM withdrawal.1
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my SNAP balance?
Your food stamp account balance, also called your SNAP food balance, is the food balance on your EBT card, so any way above works. Federal rules say you must be able to see it without buying anything.8
Can I check my EBT balance without my card?
Yes, if you already signed up for your state's app or website: just log in. The phone line asks for your card number.5 If your card is lost or stolen, call your state's EBT line from the state table above to report it. The ebtEDGE website, for example, also lets you order a new card.7
Can you check your EBT balance at an ATM or store register?
Yes. At a store, ask the cashier for a balance inquiry before you buy, if the store allows it; you don't have to buy anything.9,8 At an ATM you can check too, but fees vary by state: West Virginia warns that ATM balance inquiries may cost a fee,13 while Massachusetts charges none.6
Can I see my EBT balance in the Walmart or Amazon app?
Yes, once your card is saved. On Amazon, go to Profile, then Account, then Your Payments.10 On Walmart, add the card to your Wallet to see its balance.11
Does it cost anything to check your EBT balance?
Not for SNAP: federal rules ban transaction fees for SNAP households using EBT.8 ATM fees can apply to cash accounts.1
How do I check a SUN Bucks card balance?
Check the notice that came with the card. Minnesota's July 2025 SUN Bucks notice, for example, says each child's card is checked at ebtedge.com or in the ebtEDGE app, the help line is 1-888-997-2227, and unused benefits expire after 122 days.34 For what SUN Bucks (Summer EBT) is and which states offer it, see our Summer EBT tracker.
