Does Dollar Tree Take EBT? Dollar General and Family Dollar (2026)

Quick answer: Yes. Dollar Tree takes EBT cards in its stores, and its store locator marks each location that accepts EBT.¹ When you pay, you pick your EBT food (SNAP) or EBT cash balance.² Dollar General accepts SNAP EBT at all of its stores, and eligible Family Dollar stores take it too.³⁴ For how SNAP works and how to apply, see our SNAP guide.

Which dollar stores take EBT?

Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar do. On Oct. 26, 2026, USDA's retailer data listed 37,415 SNAP-authorized locations under those three names.⁵

Why doesn't every dollar store take EBT?

Each store has to qualify with USDA. One way is to keep at least 36 staple food items in stock.¹² That means three kinds in each of four groups (fruits or vegetables, dairy, meat or fish, and breads or cereals), with perishable foods in two groups.¹² A small independent dollar store may not carry that much food, so look it up before you shop.¹¹

Does Dollar Tree take EBT?

Yes, for SNAP-eligible food. Dollar Tree's store pages show an "Accepts EBT" badge, and many list frozen and refrigerated foods too.¹ Texas (837) and California (829) have the most authorized Dollar Tree stores.⁵

When you swipe, choose EBT food or EBT cash. Dollar Tree can't switch a finished sale to the other balance.²

Does Dollar Tree take EBT for candy?

It depends on your state. USDA's national list of what SNAP can buy includes snack foods.¹³ But USDA has approved state waivers that take candy, soda or both off the list in those states.¹⁴

Source: USDA's food restriction waiver page, updated Oct. 13, 2026. Several other states limit soda or sweetened drinks but not candy, so check your state's row there.¹⁴ Dollar Tree's delivery help page notes that stores get a 90-day grace period to apply new limits.¹⁵

Does Dollar Tree take EBT cash?

Yes, in stores. Dollar Tree's help center covers shoppers who pick EBT cash when they meant to use EBT food benefits, and says the sale can't be switched afterward.² Dollar Tree charges a $1.00 fee for cash back on debit purchases. Its help page doesn't say whether it gives cash back from an EBT cash balance, so ask the cashier.²

Does Dollar General take EBT?

Yes. Dollar General says it accepts SNAP EBT at all of its stores nationwide.³ USDA's data listed 21,195 Dollar General locations in 48 states, with the most in Texas (1,969), North Carolina (1,160) and Georgia (1,156).⁵

• No fee: Dollar General charges nothing extra to pay with SNAP EBT in stores.³
• Split payment: use SNAP for eligible items and another card or cash for the rest.³
• No store limit: you can spend up to your SNAP balance.³

Does Dollar General take EBT on DoorDash?

Yes. In March 2025, DoorDash and Dollar General announced SNAP EBT payments at more than 16,000 Dollar General stores on DoorDash, in 48 states.⁶ Our guide to using EBT on DoorDash and other delivery apps walks through adding your card and the fees SNAP can't cover.

Does Family Dollar take EBT?

Yes. Family Dollar says eligible stores accept EBT for SNAP-approved food, and that each store's participation depends on USDA authorization.⁴ USDA's data listed 7,020 Family Dollar locations in 48 states and DC, including 1,055 in Texas.⁵

Family Dollar and Dollar Tree are separate companies now. Dollar Tree sold Family Dollar to Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management on July 7, 2025.¹⁶ Nearly 7,000 Family Dollar stores accept SNAP on DoorDash, in 48 states and DC.⁹

Can you use EBT at Dollar Tree online?

Yes, through DoorDash and Instacart. Since July 28, 2026, every SNAP-eligible Dollar Tree store on DoorDash takes SNAP, with more than 1,000 eligible items in 48 states.⁷ Instacart lists both Dollar Tree and Family Dollar as EBT SNAP stores in 48 states and DC.⁸

• DoorDash: go to Account, then Payment, then Program Cards, and add your SNAP/EBT card. At checkout the SNAP-eligible subtotal is applied, and you can change the amount.⁷
• Instacart: add your EBT card under Settings, then EBT SNAP. Your state must take part in USDA's online pilot, and you also need a credit or debit card on file.¹⁷
• Not covered by EBT: delivery and service fees, bottle deposits, taxes, tips and non-EBT items.¹⁸ Family Dollar says the same about fees on its DoorDash and Instacart orders.⁴ Instacart doesn't take EBT cash.¹⁷

What can you buy with EBT at a dollar store?

The same food you can buy with SNAP anywhere. The store doesn't change the rules.¹³

• Yes: fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and fish, dairy products, breads and cereals, snack foods, non-alcoholic beverages, and seeds or plants that grow food.¹³
• No: beer, wine and liquor, tobacco, vitamins and supplements, foods that are hot when you pay, pet food, cleaning supplies, paper products, hygiene items and cosmetics.¹³

Dollar stores also sell household goods, cleaning products, party supplies, toys and pet supplies, so bring a second way to pay for those.⁴ Our A–Z list of SNAP-eligible items covers the gray areas.

Do Dollar General, Dollar Tree or Family Dollar take WIC?

Usually not. Each state decides which stores can take WIC, based on food prices, the variety and amount of WIC foods in stock, and the owner's record.¹⁹ States only have to approve enough stores for families to reach WIC foods, and nearly 46,000 stores are approved nationwide.¹⁹

We searched two state lists on Oct. 26, 2026:

• Alabama: none of the 694 WIC vendors was a Dollar General, Dollar Tree or Family Dollar.²⁰ USDA lists 1,017 SNAP-authorized Dollar General stores in the state.⁵
• New York: none of the 2,803 WIC vendors was one of the three chains.²¹ The state has 633 Dollar General, 345 Dollar Tree and 236 Family Dollar SNAP locations.⁵

Do Five Below, Ollie's and Big Lots take EBT?

Five Below doesn't: its help center lists EBT cards among the payments it can't accept.¹⁰ On Oct. 26, 2026, USDA's retailer data had no locations under the names Five Below, Ollie's Bargain Outlet, Big Lots, pOpshelf or 99 Cents Only Stores.⁵ Independent dollar stores vary, so search the address in the SNAP Retailer Locator.¹¹ For grocery chains, see our guide to stores that accept EBT.

Why do dollar stores matter for SNAP shoppers?

Many are close to home. Dollar General says about 75% of the U.S. is within five miles of one of its stores.⁶ USDA's Food Access Research Atlas measures low food access as distance from a SNAP-authorized store or a large grocer.²² Its SNAP store map, added in July 2026, counts every SNAP store type except farmers markets and delivery routes.²² Our food access data by state shows where those gaps are.

Can I split my payment between EBT and cash at Dollar General?

Yes. Dollar General lets you pay for eligible items with SNAP EBT and the rest with another payment method.³ Keep food and nonfood items apart on the belt to make the split easier.

Can I buy diapers with EBT at a dollar store?

Not with SNAP. SNAP can't pay for nonfood items such as paper products, household supplies and hygiene items, and diapers fall in that group.¹³ Pay for them with cash, a debit card or, at Dollar Tree, your EBT cash balance.²

Why was my EBT card declined at a dollar store?

Dollar Tree says it doesn't receive details when a card is declined, so the answer has to come from your card issuer.² For EBT, that's your state's EBT customer service line. It also helps to check your EBT balance first.

The same day, we counted locations in USDA's SNAP retailer data by store name and searched Alabama's and New York's WIC vendor lists.⁵²⁰²¹ We did not visit stores, test cards or compare prices. Store names in USDA's data vary, so a few locations may be missing from our counts.
