FDPIR (Tribal Food Distribution)

Food distribution for households on Indian reservations

What is FDPIR?

The Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) provides USDA commodity foods directly to low-income households living on or near Indian reservations. FDPIR serves as an alternative to SNAP for eligible Native American households.

The program is administered locally by Indian Tribal Organizations (ITOs) or state agencies. Participants receive a monthly food package that includes a variety of nutritious foods.

FDPIR vs. SNAP

Important: You cannot receive FDPIR and SNAP benefits in the same month. However, you can switch between the two programs on a monthly basis. Some households find FDPIR more convenient because food is distributed directly rather than requiring a trip to a store.

FDPIR food packages typically include canned meats, fruits, and vegetables; juice; dried beans; rice and other grains; cheese; and other staples. The monthly food package provides a nutritionally balanced diet.

How to Participate

Contact your local Indian Tribal Organization (ITO) or the USDA FNS regional office to learn about FDPIR availability in your area. Not all reservations and tribal areas participate — contact your tribe or call the USDA at 1-703-305-2680 for assistance.
