Quick answer: Yes. Trader Joe's lists EBT cards among the payments it takes, but only in its stores, because it sells nothing online.1 Whole Foods and Sprouts take EBT in their stores too, and both take SNAP for online pickup and delivery orders.234 For how SNAP works and who qualifies, see our SNAP guide.

Which specialty grocers take EBT?

All three do. EBT, short for electronic benefit transfer, is the card that carries your SNAP benefits. On Oct. 25, 2026, USDA's retailer data listed 1,699 SNAP-authorized stores under these three names.5

Does Trader Joe's take EBT?

Yes. EBT cards are on Trader Joe's payment list, so you can use SNAP, still often called food stamps, at the register.1 USDA's data lists 650 Trader Joe's stores as SNAP-authorized, and 209 of them are in California.5

Pay for your food with EBT, and for wine, flowers or other nonfood items with another payment method.

Does Trader Joe's accept EBT online?

No. Trader Joe's says it sells nothing online, offers no curbside pickup or delivery, and doesn't work with delivery services such as Instacart.1 To use SNAP there, you shop in person.

What forms of payment does Trader Joe's accept?

Trader Joe's lists six:1

  • Mobile payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay)
  • Credit and debit cards
  • Cash
  • Personal checks up to $1501
  • EBT cards
  • Trader Joe's gift cards (physical cards only)

Trader Joe's has no coupons, sales, membership cards or discounts, so there is no EBT discount either.1

Can you buy frozen meals at Trader Joe's with EBT?

Yes. SNAP covers any food for the household, and frozen meals you heat at home count.7 So do snacks, ice cream, coffee beans and plants that grow food, such as a potted basil plant.7 Beer, wine, vitamins and nonfood items are out.7

Does Whole Foods take EBT?

Yes. Whole Foods says its stores accept "electronic food stamps (EBT)" along with cash, Apple Pay, cards and gift cards.2 USDA's data lists 538 Whole Foods Market stores, including 365 by Whole Foods Market, as SNAP-authorized in 44 states and DC.5

Can you use EBT at Whole Foods online?

Yes, through Amazon. Whole Foods takes SNAP EBT for eligible food on delivery and pickup orders at its U.S. stores, and it says those services are for Prime members.3 Check the costs before you order:

  • Delivery orders carry a $9.95 service fee, and SNAP can't pay it.3
  • SNAP also can't pay tips, shipping or sweetened-beverage taxes, so add a debit or credit card.8
  • Amazon doesn't take Cash EBT on Whole Foods orders, only SNAP.8
  • Pickup is free on orders of $35 or more.8
  • Amazon offers people with a registered EBT card a grocery subscription for $4.99 a month instead of $9.99, without Prime fees, with free delivery on Whole Foods orders over $35. You can't pay for it with EBT.8

You still enter your PIN to pay with SNAP online.9

Does Whole Foods take EBT for hot food?

No. SNAP can't buy food that is hot when you pay, so the hot bar, hot soup and a rotisserie chicken from the warmer are out.7 The same goes for a hot coffee from the café, though bagged coffee beans count.7

Does Sprouts take EBT?

Yes. Sprouts lists EBT cards among the payments it gladly accepts.10 USDA's data lists 511 Sprouts stores as SNAP-authorized in 25 states, led by California (164), Texas (69) and Florida (63).5

Does Sprouts take EBT online?

Yes. Sprouts takes a valid EBT card for online pickup and delivery orders, but not EBT Cash.4 A few setup details:

  • Link a credit or debit card too. It covers fees, taxes, delivery tips, bottle deposits in some states and items SNAP doesn't cover.4
  • You can save only one EBT card to your profile.11
  • Once your card is added, tap "EBT Eligible" in search, or look for "EBT" next to the price and under each item in your cart.12

Does Sprouts take EBT at self-checkout?

Sprouts' payment list names EBT cards and doesn't carve out self-checkout lanes.10 If a kiosk won't take your card, ask a staff member or move to a staffed lane.

What can you buy with EBT at specialty grocers?

The same food you can buy at any SNAP store. A pricier or organic version of a food follows the same rules as the basic one.7

  • Yes: fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and fish, dairy, breads and cereals, snack foods, non-alcoholic drinks, and seeds and plants that grow food.7
  • No: beer, wine and liquor, tobacco, vitamins and supplements (anything with a Supplement Facts label), food that is hot when you pay, pet food, cleaning and paper goods, and hygiene items and cosmetics.7

Can you use EBT at the salad bar or for sushi?

Yes, when the food is cold. Federal rules leave out only hot foods prepared for immediate consumption, so cold sushi, packaged sandwiches and cold salads count as eligible food.13 If the same rule leaves you unsure about one item, ask the cashier before you pay.

What can you no longer buy with EBT in 2026?

It depends on your state. USDA's waiver page lists 23 states that have sought limits on items such as soda, energy drinks, candy and prepared desserts. On June 22, 2026, a federal court stopped four of them: Colorado, Iowa, Tennessee and West Virginia.14 Two big states for these chains:

  • Florida: no soda, energy drinks, candy or prepared desserts on SNAP, with a target start of April 20, 2026. Check that rule before you buy bakery sweets.14
  • Texas: no sweetened drinks or candy on SNAP, with a target start of April 1, 2026.14

California, which has the most stores of all three chains, isn't on USDA's list.145 Our guide to stores that accept EBT tracks these changes.

Which other specialty grocers take EBT?

Several regional natural and specialty chains are SNAP-authorized too. These counts come from the same USDA data.5

How we checked this

On Oct. 25, 2026, we read the payment, online-ordering and EBT pages of Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market, Amazon and Sprouts, and USDA's pages on eligible foods, online shopping, food restriction waivers and Summer EBT.1284791415 We also read the federal definition of eligible foods.13

The same day, we counted each chain's stores in USDA's SNAP retailer data by store name, leaving out unrelated stores with similar names, such as local co-ops.5 We did not visit stores, test cards or compare prices, so confirm a store in the SNAP Retailer Locator before you go.6

Next step: check your EBT balance before you shop, and read our SNAP guide for what your benefits cover. If your benefits run short, find a food pantry near you.
