Emergency Food Help →
Quick answer: Free Thanksgiving meals come in four forms: a hot community dinner on the day, a holiday food box or basket you cook at home, a free turkey handed out before the holiday, and a meal delivered to people who can't get out. Most are run by local food banks, pantries, churches and charities.
Feeding America's ZIP code finder covers more than 200 member food banks that can connect you with holiday food boxes.1 Calling 211 gets you confidential help finding what's running in your county.2 For help on any other day of the year, use our emergency food help guide.
Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26.3 Holiday programs plan around that date, so the time to call is now.
Where can I get a free Thanksgiving dinner?
Start with three calls or searches. Each one reaches a different set of programs, and none of them has a complete list.
- Call 211 or use 211.org. Ask for "Thanksgiving meals and holiday food boxes" and give your ZIP code. Every call is confidential.2 Our 211 guide explains how the call works.
- Look up your food bank with Feeding America's finder. Check its website for holiday distributions and partner pantries.1
- Call your local pantry. Search PantryPath for pantries in your area, then check the distribution schedule for dates.
Here is how the four types of help compare, as of October 2026:
| Type of help | What you get | Where to ask | Before you go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community dinner | A hot meal on Thanksgiving Day, to eat there or take home | 211, churches, the Salvation Army, community centers | Ask if you need to RSVP |
| Holiday food box or basket | Groceries for a meal you cook | Food bank, pantry, 211 | Ask about sign-up dates and papers |
| Turkey giveaway | A frozen turkey, sometimes with sides | Food bank, churches, nonprofits | Ask if you need a ticket or appointment |
| Home-delivered meal | A meal brought to your door | Eldercare Locator, meal providers, 211 | Ask if you must enroll first |
Call ahead before you travel. In PantryPath's directory of 7,566 confirmed pantries, 619 listings work by appointment only.4 Our listings don't show holiday hours, so confirm the pantry is open the week of November 23.
How do Thanksgiving food baskets and boxes work?
A Thanksgiving food basket (or food box) is a bag or box of groceries for a holiday meal that you cook at home. Food banks connect people with holiday food boxes, often through partner pantries. Contents and rules vary by program, so ask.1
Some pantry food comes from the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). This federal program gives food to people with low income at no cost.5 Read our TEFAP guide to see how that food reaches local pantries.
When you call about a basket, ask:
- Is there a sign-up, and when does it close?
- What do I bring: ID, proof of address or proof of income?
- Is pickup walk-in, drive-through or by appointment?
- Does the box include a turkey? Will it be frozen?
- Can someone else pick up for me?
- Are there options for diabetic, halal, vegetarian or other diets?

How can I get a free turkey for Thanksgiving?
Ask your food bank, your pantry and 211 about turkey giveaways in November. Ask whether the turkey comes with a holiday box or needs its own sign-up.
Most giveaway turkeys are frozen. Plan the thaw before you pick one up. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) says to allow about 24 hours in the refrigerator for every four to five pounds. In cold water, allow 30 minutes per pound and change the water every 30 minutes.6 The times below are worked out from those rules:
| Turkey weight | Refrigerator thaw | Cold-water thaw |
|---|---|---|
| 12 pounds | About 2½ to 3 days | About 6 hours |
| 16 pounds | About 3 to 4 days | About 8 hours |
| 20 pounds | About 4 to 5 days | About 10 hours |
A turkey thawed in the refrigerator keeps there for one to two more days. A turkey thawed in cold water must be cooked right away. Cook it until the inside reaches at least 165°F.6
Can I get a free Thanksgiving meal delivered?
The main route is a home-delivered meal program for older adults. The Eldercare Locator, run by the federal Administration for Community Living, connects older adults and their families to local services. Call or text 1-800-677-1116.7 Ask whether a home-delivered meal program in your area serves Thanksgiving and whether you need to enroll first.
In PantryPath's directory, 1,219 listings offer delivery service.4 Our Meals on Wheels guide and food help for seniors list the regular year-round options.
Are there free Thanksgiving meals for veterans and military families?
Yes. Operation Homefront runs Holiday Meals for Military events for military and veteran families. Since it began in 2010, it has served more than 900,000 family members.8 Events are listed by location on its Family Events page, and each event sets its own rules.
In PantryPath's directory, 538 listings say they serve veterans.4 See food help for veterans for year-round options.
Can I use SNAP or EBT for Thanksgiving food?
Yes, for groceries. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) covers food for the household. That includes meat, poultry, fish, dairy, breads and cereals.9 That means you can buy a turkey, stuffing mix, potatoes, rolls and pie ingredients with your EBT card.
SNAP can't pay for food that is hot when you buy it.9 The one exception is the Restaurant Meals Program, which only works in states that offer it. Everyone in the household must be 60 or older, have a disability or be homeless.10 Our list of restaurants that take EBT covers which states have it. If you aren't on SNAP yet, start with our SNAP guide. For stretching a holiday budget, see cheap meals for families.
How do I give to a Thanksgiving food drive?
You can give food the pantry asks for, give money, or give time. Feeding America's virtual Thanksgiving food drive runs from November 1 to November 30. It says every dollar raised helps provide 10 meals through its network.11
If you give food, use the pantry's own list. One Thanksgiving food donation list, from Lighthouse in Pontiac, Michigan, asks for:12
- Canned vegetables, canned fruit and canned soup
- Boxed stuffing, instant potatoes and jarred gravy
- Canned cranberry sauce
- Proteins: beans, peanut butter and canned meats
- Cereal, rice, pasta sauce and noodles, and macaroni and cheese
Drop-off windows can close weeks before the holiday. Lighthouse took food drive drop-offs only from October 21 to November 6, and every drop-off had to be scheduled.12 Call before you collect. Our guide to running a food drive pantries actually want covers the rest, and volunteer opportunities lists ways to give time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is giving out Thanksgiving baskets?
Food banks, their partner pantries, churches and charities give out most Thanksgiving baskets. Feeding America's finder points you to your food bank, which can name its partners near you.1 211 can also list baskets in your county.2
Is the Salvation Army open on Thanksgiving?
Some local Salvation Army sites serve a meal on the day. In 2025, its Rochester, Minnesota site invited everyone to a free Thanksgiving Day meal of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce and pie.13 Hours differ by site. PantryPath lists 478 Salvation Army locations, so look up yours and call to confirm.4
Do I need ID for a free Thanksgiving meal?
It depends on the program. In PantryPath's directory, 1,657 listings say they require ID, 817 say they don't, and the rest don't say.4 Ask when you call. If you have no ID, see pantries that welcome everyone.
Where can I get free stuff for Thanksgiving if I'm homeless?
Ask 211 for community dinners and shelters serving holiday meals.2 If you get SNAP and live in a state with the Restaurant Meals Program, you may be able to buy a hot meal with EBT.10 Our guide to food help without a fixed address lists more options.
What if I missed the sign-up?
Call 211 and your pantry anyway. A community dinner on the day may not need a sign-up, and your pantry's regular distribution can still cover the basics. Then look for December holiday baskets.
How long are Thanksgiving leftovers safe?
Refrigerate leftovers within two hours, or one hour above 90°F. USDA says they keep in the refrigerator for up to four days. In the freezer they stay at best quality for two to six months.6
How we checked this
On October 15, 2026, we opened every source listed below. They include the U.S. Office of Personnel Management holiday calendar and three USDA Food and Nutrition Administration pages. We also read the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Thanksgiving guide and the pages of the Eldercare Locator, 211, Feeding America, Operation Homefront, Lighthouse and the Salvation Army.
Directory figures come from 7,566 confirmed PantryPath listings with a state, city and name, queried the same day.4 ID figures cover only listings that state an ID policy. Our directory doesn't record holiday hours or Thanksgiving events, so we don't list specific 2026 dinners. Local schedules change every year. Report an error to corrections@pantrypath.com.
Next step: call 211 or find a pantry on PantryPath this week and ask what it has planned for Thanksgiving.
