Over 13 million children in America experience food insecurity. Fortunately, a robust network of federal and community programs ensures that no child has to go hungry — regardless of their family's income, immigration status, or circumstances.

National School Lunch Program

The largest child nutrition program in the US serves about 30 million children daily. Free or reduced-price lunch is available based on family income. Many schools now participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which provides free meals to ALL students regardless of income.

School Breakfast Program

Free breakfast before school — research shows it dramatically improves academic performance and behavior. Available at most schools that participate in the lunch program.

Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)

When school is out, free meals continue at parks, libraries, community centers, and churches. No registration required — any child 18 or under can eat. Find sites using the USDA Summer Meals Site Finder or call 211.

Afterschool Snack & Supper Programs

Many afterschool programs (Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, community centers) serve free snacks and sometimes full suppers to participating children.

Backpack Programs

Food banks send discreet bags of food home with children on Fridays to cover weekends. The bags contain shelf-stable items like granola bars, fruit cups, mac and cheese, and juice boxes. Schools coordinate with local food banks.

WIC for Infants & Children

WIC provides free food for infants (formula, baby food) and children aged 1-4 (milk, eggs, cereal, fruits, vegetables). No citizenship required.

Food Pantries for Families

Food pantries serve families with children and often stock baby food, formula, diapers, and kid-friendly items. Many operate on a no-questions-asked basis.
